Safety Management Systems (SMS)
A Safety Management System (SMS) is a formal organisational framework to manage safety. Under an SMS, organisations will need to have systems for hazard identification and risk management, safety targets and reporting processes, procedures for audit, investigations, remedial actions, and safety education.
The policies contained in the SMS are about the importance of safety, who is responsible for safety functions, and what level of performance is to be achieved. The SMS defines how safety-related policies and procedures are to be implemented. To be effective, it must be part of everyday practice.
The CAA has adopted a policy of implementing Safety Management Systems (SMS) requirements for a wide range of certificated organisations in the civil aviation system. The SMS policy will be implemented through a series of amendments to Civil Aviation Rules (CARs).
These pages will show updated information as the project progresses.
