CNS / ATM
CNS/ATM stands for Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Systems for Air Traffic Management. The system uses digital technologies, including satellite systems, and varying levels of automation to achieve a seamless global Air Traffic Management system.
There is no standard CNS/ATM solution. Each is tailored to a specific area. The challenge is to develop solutions that allow quick benefits and return on investment. The introduction of new CNS capabilities and increasingly capable ground and airborne systems will enable the evolution of more sophisticated ATM systems, in turn allowing greater benefit from CNS systems. A fully integrated ATM system will make increasing use of automation to reduce or eliminate a variety of constraints imposed on ATM operations by current systems.
New Zealand actively participates in many of the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) regional forums, which have developed many of the Standards and Recommended Practices that are in use or will apply with the introduction of new CNS/ATM systems in the Asia/Pacific Region and the New Zealand Flight Information Region (FIR). Already new technology has allowed greater flexibility in oceanic routing, resulting in reduced flight times and significant fuel savings. Future enhancements in the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) will open more avenues for CNS/ATM applications. A team of representatives from the aviation industry, ACNZ and the CAA is examining these developments for the New Zealand environment.
