International Alignment of TAF, METAR and SPECI Code

As the ICAO Meteorological Authority in New Zealand, CAA is currently looking at certain New Zealand practices with regard to the coding of TAFs, METARs and SPECIs. New Zealand’s current practice for some aspects of these reports does not conform to the international specifications set out in Annex 3 to the Chicago Convention. In particular, the CAA is reviewing the use of weather, cloud and visibility code groups to ascertain whether the New Zealand practice can be aligned with the international requirements.

This discussion paper sets out the current usage and the proposed usage and related information.

Views are sought from the aviation community on the proposed realignment of the New Zealand practice. The cut-off date for comment is 7 September 2007.

Written comments should be addressed for the attention of Keith Mackersy, Technical Consultant Meteorology either by post or by e-mail to mackersyk@caa.govt.nz

Results of the process will be advised.
