Australian Engineers – The TTMRA and Getting your Licence Recognised in New Zealand

Under the provisions of the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Act (TTMRA), Australian aircraft maintenance engineers who wish to operate in New Zealand must first register with the CAA on form CAA 24066-08 TTMRA Licence Registration AME and pay a $25 administration fee.

Registered engineers may exercise the privileges of their licence in New Zealand without having to hold a New Zealand licence, but are required to keep their qualifications continuously current under the Australian legislation.

Important note: It is the responsibility of the engineer to ensure they hold the appropriate ratings to certify release to service and ensure that all maintenance and certification of New Zealand registered aircraft for which they are responsible is carried out in accordance with New Zealand Civil Aviation Rules Australian regulations do not apply.

Australian AME licence holders can also apply for a New Zealand AME licence issued on the basis of their Australian Licence under provisions to recognise foreign AMELs. This is the preferred option by some employers and industry.
