Becoming a Medical Examiner

Civil Aviation Rule Part 67 (CAR Part 67) describes the requirements for becoming a Medical Examiner. They include the following:

  • Acceptable aviation medicine training
  • Acceptable aviation regulatory medicine training
  • Demonstration of relevant competencies (See Appendix A, Rule part 67)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Meeting the exposition requirements.

For the full legal description, please refer to CAR Part 67. In addition to the application and an exposition, the Civil Aviation Act 1990 requires the Director to be satisfied that an applicant is fit and proper to hold the document.

How do I apply?

To apply for a designation as a Medical Examiner, it is necessary to complete an application, an exposition and the Fit and Proper Person Questionnaire.

The CAA has an online facility to enable this, which may be used as follows:

  • Use your supplied Login and Password to access the online exposition.
  • Follow the instructions provided to complete the exposition.
  • On completion, you will be able to submit the exposition electronically, for consideration by the Director.

Maintaining Medical Examiner Designation

The requirements for continued compliance by Medical Examiners are laid down in CAR Part 67.203. It includes the ongoing requirement for aviation medicine and regulatory medicine training. In addition it requires an up-to-date exposition to be maintained and available for inspection.

Note: Transitional arrangements following the introduction of the new CAR Part 67 on 1 May 06.

Current MEs are required to complete their exposition within six months, ie by 30 Nov 06. MEs will be notified of their login ID and password in two separate letters. These will be sent out in a staggered manner over the next few months. If you need to complete your exposition earlier for any reason, please advise the Central Medical Unit.
