Ian Pirie, General Manager Airline Group - Resigns
6 March 2001
The Civil Aviation Authority's General Manager Airline Group, Ian Pirie, has resigned.
Captain Pirie joined the CAA to run one of the new groups established during last year's restructure.
The Director of Civil Aviation Kevin Ward said the resignation, effective at the end of this month, was with great regret from both the CAA and Captain Pirie.
"Ian has tendered his resignation with regret due to a combination of factors, mainly his family welfare, his wish to resume airline flying, and to resume his aviation management consultancy business," Mr Ward said.
"I will be very sorry to see Ian go. He has already achieved a lot in establishing the airline group and contributing to the leadership and safety focus of the CAA."
Captain Pirie has extensive flight deck and airline management experience, most recently as General Manager, Airline and Airline Operations at Air Nelson. After six years with the RNZAF serving in tactical transport and flight instruction, Ian joined Safeair in 1973 as a pilot, moving into training and the role of Flight Operations Manager. In 1990, Ian joined Air Nelson, introducing the Saab 340 fleet and overseeing growth of flight operations to 24 aircraft and 350 staff. Rising to General Manager, he became responsible for all operational aspects, engineering, customer and cabin services, flight operations, inventory, and personnel. In 1995, he established his own business as a contract pilot and aviation management consultant.
