CAA Moving on Coroner's Findings

The Civil Aviation Authority is already working to implement most of the findings relating to its operations from the Coroner's report on inquests into the death eight people in the Air Adventures tragedy at Christchurch three years ago.

"We are already working on all but four of the findings that relate directly to the activities of the CAA, and expect to have decisions on how we can tackle those remaining four by the end of this week," says the Director of Civil Aviation John Jones.

"A number of the Coroner's recommendations can be dealt with under projects we had under way in response to the Auditor General's review of our certification and surveillance operations last year.

"Civil Aviation Rule changes are required to address several of the Coroner's findings. Rule changes take more time to implement than other recommendations for change.

"The rule change process requires us to carry out technical analysis, possibly cost-benefit analysis, and consultation with the aviation industry. We will be pushing the pace on them as fast as we can.

"We are determined to show that we are addressing the shortcomings that have come to light through the tragedy and will issue monthly reports on progress," John Jones says.
