Australian Airlines to Pay New Zealand Passenger Safety Levy
Cabinet has approved an amendment to the Civil Aviation (Safety) Levies Order 2002 to ensure Australian airlines operating in New Zealand under their Australian certificates pay passenger safety levies.
“From 4 December these Australian airlines operating within New Zealand will now pay $1.66 per domestic passenger sector,” says Director of Civil Aviation Steve Douglas.
“The passenger safety levies fund most of the cost of safety oversight in our aviation system. This amendment corrects an anomaly in the current law that makes only holders of New Zealand air operator certificates liable to pay domestic passenger levies.”
The new levy will be set at 83 percent of that paid by New Zealand operators. This takes account of the fact the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority is responsible for direct regulatory oversight of these particular operators, while the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority provides safety oversight over other airlines and all other parts of the New Zealand aviation system in which these airlines operate. The CAA conducted consultation before making a recommendation for change to the Minister of Transport. Now that the Government has made its decision, the CAA will take steps to put the amended Levies Order into effect.
