French paraglider pilot fined $1500
A French paraglider pilot has been issued with two infringement notices totalling $1500 by the Civil Aviation Authority after low flying close to the Kingston Flier train near Queenstown on the 9 January 2008.
The first infringement notice relates to breach of minimum height rules and attracts a $500 fine. The second relates to the requirement to hold a New Zealand pilot certificate and attracts a $1000 fine.
A second paraglider pilot involved in the incident is understood to have left New Zealand and efforts are being made to locate him and discuss the matter.
The separate matter of a German paraglider pilot who recently made a flight over Mount Cook is still being looked into.
Director of Civil Aviation Steve Douglas said all paraglider pilots, including pilots visiting from overseas, must ensure that they are members of the New Zealand Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association, hold a New Zealand pilot certificate, and abide by the civil aviation rules.
