Security Screening of airport workers

From Monday, March 31 airport workers at international airports will be randomly screened for prohibited items or substances that may be a threat to aviation security.

Under a direction issued by the Director of Civil Aviation, Aviation Security Service (Avsec) officers will randomly screen workers at international airports who are within specially designated restricted areas, such as the airside baggage and ramp aprons. Any airport workers may be screened.

Director of Civil Aviation Steve Douglas said the new measure brings New Zealand into compliance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

“The screening means that airport workers within the designated areas, and their personal belongings or vehicles, will be subject to similar security controls as passengers travelling on international aircraft.  The level of screening will be adjusted according to the assessed threat, which will be constantly monitored.”

The new measure will be permanent and consistently applied nationally. The designated areas will be defined on each airport’s security plan, and will be signposted.

Avsec will exercise discretion in allowing airport workers who require a prohibited item to do their job, such as a spanner or other tool, into the restricted area.

“The new measures will allow New Zealand to meet its international obligations for aviation security, whilst minimising the impact on busy airport operations,” Mr Douglas said.
