Industry Confidence in Civil Aviation Authority High

Rodger Fisher, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority, responded today to comments made by Rodney Hide in a recent press release.

A survey recently commissioned by the CAA from research company Colmar Brunton showed that 87 percent of respondents rated the CAA's performance as excellent and/or satisfactory. The survey involved interviews with pilots, maintenance organisations, doctors, and airline operators a total of 302 respondents. The results were released on 28 May 2003.

"I am satisfied that the CAA is in good standing with its customers," says Mr Fisher.

"When allegations are made against the organisation, we look into them at once. The issue Mr Hide has raised involving a CAA employee occurred in May 2002, over twelve months ago. When it came to the attention of the Authority we immediately reviewed our conflict of interest policy and procedure. In addition, on 13 June 2003, I asked the State Services Commission to undertake an independent review of the various allegations concerning this conflict of interest and into the conduct of special purpose investigations."

The Terms of Reference for the review are on the CAA web site, www.caa.govt.nz.

"I do not accept that the CAA is doing its job poorly. If Mr Hide has other information which he has not revealed, I would welcome the opportunity to see it. I can assure the public of New Zealand that if there are any issues that need to be addressed I will ensure that the necessary action is taken and taken promptly," says Mr Fisher.
