MEDIA RELEASE

Aviation Safety Planning Forum

A two-day aviation safety planning forum will be held in the Duxton Hotel, Wellington, on 5-6 September. More than 140 representatives of every aviation sector are attending the forum which will develop aviation safety strategies for the next three to five years.

The planning forum, the first of its kind, is being hosted by the Civil Aviation Authority in partnership with Airways, Aviation Co-operating Underwriters Pacific Ltd and Aviation Services Ltd.

"The challenge of reducing accidents is too great for any of us individually, but together we can produce the ideas and programmes that will have a real effect," said the incoming Director of Civil Aviation, John Jones.

"There are 25 to 35 fatalities a year – we have to drive that number down. We want the ideas of the participants – their joint wisdom. We want full aviation community participation in developing the Safety Plan which details how all participants, including operators, service providers, and the regulator, will work to drive down accident rates. We see it as highly likely that joint programmes will emerge," he said.

Participants have registered from all sectors in aviation, including airlines, helicopter operators, engineering, service providers, training organisations, and sports groups.

Note to Chief Reporters: The forum will be closed to the media. A media conference will be held at the conclusion of the forum at 4pm on Thursday 6 September.
