Rule Brief

The purpose of Part 100 is to prescribe the certification requirements for Safety Management Systems (SMS). SMS aims to improve New Zealand’s aviation safety performance in a way that embeds an effective safety culture in aviation organisations; and to ensure New Zealand meets its international obligations as a signatory to the Convention on International Civil Aviation.

Part 100 prescribes requirements for a system of safety management scaled to the size of the organisation that includes:

  • a safety policy
  • a process for risk management
  • safety assurance measures
  • training for personnel.

Certificated organisations will have a Safety Management System in accordance with Part 100 as required by Parts 115, 119, 121, 125, 135, 137, 139, 141, 145, 146, 148, 149, 171, 172, 173, 174, and 175.
